Why Do You Make Art?

If you’ve been searching for your style, you know that it is easy to get distracted and derailed. I’ve found myself chasing bright, shiny objects (the newest cool work I’ve seen), taking detours, making u-turns and just generally floundering around.

I don’t expect to find one style and stick with it forever but I do want to commit to making a body of work without veering off into a million side projects. In an effort to get and stay in touch with my reasons for making art I created a worksheet for myself. You can see my answers below.

What are your motivations for making art? I want to make art that feels playful and has a sense of movement. I want to communicate joy, humor and emotion. I want to invite viewers into a wonky world of my own creation.

What is your favorite thing about the experience of making art? Being immersed in the a project and also the surprise of how things turn out.

How do you feel when you make art? Filled with the feeling that anything is possible.

What is your favorite thing about the outcome of your artwork? The conversations that emerge between elements on the canvas.

When do you feel best about making art? I'm just doing it for myself- not worrying about what other people think.

When do you feel worst about making art? When I compare myself to others or thinking about critiques that my instructors or peers from art school would offer about the artwork I’m making now.

My answers to these questions have helped me to feel grounded in my own art making. The last question is a reminder to myself about what not to focus on.

Please let me know if this worksheet is helpful to you.
